Overview

At Ashcraft Orthodontics, we are proud to offer our patients the latest in proven care and technology to deliver targeted end results. Kodak 3D digital x-rays (radiographs) are one such advanced tool that experienced orthodontist Dr. Michael Ashcraft and our team use to diagnose orthodontic conditions and plan a proper course of treatment. As a preferred alternative to traditional film x-rays, digital radiographs are faster, more efficient, and safer for patients, reducing the radiation from the x-ray process by up to 90%. Digital x-rays are highly defined, showing the teeth, bone, jaw, and other structures around the mouth in much greater detail. By utilizing advanced 3D digital x-rays, Dr. Ashcraft can often identify orthodontic concerns earlier on and plan a course of treatment with enhanced accuracy to improve oral conditions and overall function. This type of advanced diagnostic approach enables our team to provide personalized services for each individual smile and is an important part of the orthodontic process here in our Little Rock, AR practice location.

Best Candidates

Thanks to their minimally invasive nature, 3D digital x-rays are safe for most orthodontic patients, including younger children. Digital x-rays are an essential part of the diagnostic and treatment planning process and enable Dr. Ashcraft to gain a thorough understanding of oral conditions and treatment needs. These detailed diagnostic images allow us to visualize parts of the mouth and jaw that are not visible to the naked eye and evaluate for hidden concerns, like tooth misalignment, issues with jawbone structure, delayed eruption patterns, and impacted teeth, among other types of problems. Even though our digital x-ray system produces minimal radiation, we only recommend x-rays when absolutely necessary. Patients who are pregnant or who might be are advised to let our team know before having x-rays so that proper precautions can be taken.

What to Expect

Dr. Ashcraft recommends that patients have digital x-rays taken during the initial treatment consultation and as needed throughout the course of care to keep a watch on the progress of tooth movement. For most orthodontic patients, a panoramic x-ray will be taken to show the entire upper and lower jawbones, positioning of the teeth (included those that have not erupted), and the sinus cavities, along with additional structures in the mouth and facial areas. To begin, we will position you in front of our state-of-the-art machine and have you bite firmly on a small plastic guide stick. When you are ready, the machine will start to move, completing a full circle around your head and capturing a high-quality image along the way. Your x-ray is immediately transmitted to your patient file in our digital software system. Panoramic x-rays are very comfortable, quick, and efficient and only take a few minutes to complete.

Follow-Up

Our 3D imaging technology produces a very clear, detailed three-dimensional view of the face, teeth, and jaws, which better equips Dr. Ashcraft to diagnose orthodontic problems and offer the appropriate type of care to correct oral concerns. When your x-ray is ready, he will review details of your oral health and treatment needs, pointing out any areas of concern on your 3D image for you to see. At Ashcraft Orthodontics, 3D digital x-rays are taken at the start of treatment and as needed throughout the course of care to monitor progress and tooth movement. Digital x-rays are kept with your patient record to be referred to as needed during your orthodontic process.

Insurance Coverage

As a diagnostic procedure, panoramic dental x-rays are typically covered by most dental insurance plans every 3 – 5 years. Before beginning your treatment, a member of our team will review your insurance plan and covered benefits and let you know of any personal expense. Ashcraft Orthodontics is pleased to accept various payment methods, including flexible financing through CareCredit®, to help make getting the care your family needs even more convenient.
